OLEAN, NY – Following an investigation into a complaint of suspected welfare fraud from the Cattaraugus County Department of Social Service, police arrested Lester M. Smith Jr., 66, of Delevan, for welfare fraud Thursday.
Police said Smith fraudulently received $2,796 in food stamps by failing to report income, then turned himself in at the Department of Social Services and was released with an appearance ticket.
Smith was charged with grand larceny fourth degree, welfare fraud fourth degree, two counts of offering a false instrument for filing first degree and misuse of food stamps.
He is due in the City of Olean Court at a later date.
