OLEAN, NY — The police department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating a man who broke into a North Fourth Street/ Oak Hill area home.

Police said residents of the home awoke around 4 a.m. and found a man inside going through their belongings. They confronted the man, and he is believed to have fled north on Fourth Street toward Olean High School.

Police described the man as being white, in his mid-30s, having a medium build, having scab marks on his arms and pock marks on his face and with brown or dirty blond hair pulled back into a pony tail. He is believed to be a smoker, because he left a strong odor of cigarette smoke in the home, and no resident of the home smokes inside, police added.

Police are asking individuals with information about the incident to contact the department’s criminal unit at 716-376-5672.
