OLEAN, NY — One person died, and another suffered serious injuries in a fire at 1671 E. Fall Road Wednesday night, according to a press release from the City of Olean Fire Department.
The entire first floor of the 21/2 storey, wood-frame structure was on fire, and flames were moving to the second floor, and possibly the attic, when firefighters arrived at 7:20 p.m. As crews were attempting to enter the building, the front porch collapsed.
Firefighters attempted to use a window to rescue a person who was trapped on the first floor, but the individual had already succumbed to injuries from smoke and fire, according to the release.
A second person was transported to Olean General Hospital with serious injuries and later transferred to Erie County Medical Center, where they remain in serious condition.
The names of both individuals are being withheld pending notifications.
Olean and Cattaraugus County fire investigation teams conducted and are finalizing reports on the cause of the fire.
The Olean Fire Department responded with 21 firefighters, two engines, one ladder and two ambulances.
The City of Olean received mutual aid from the Westons Mills Fire Department, Allegany Engine Company, Allegany Emergency Medical Services, Portville Fire Department and Hinsdale Emergency Medical Services.
The Olean Police Department assisted with traffic and crowd control.
New York State Electric and Gas and National Grid crews assisted with utility disconnects.
Olean Code Enforcement officials went on site Thursday morning to determine the building's disposition.
