OLEAN, NY — An Olean man was arrested on multiple charges Monday for allegedly holding a woman and two children at gunpoint and threatening to shoot the woman.
Orishio D. KingsBerry, 27, was charged with menacing, criminal possession of a weapon, endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child following an incident that ended without injury at the Country Fair store on 12th Street.
According to police, KingsBerry was involved in a domestic incident with woman and the children that began at an apartment on North 15th Street late Monday afternoon. Police said the incident continued during a car ride when KingsBerry loaded a stolen handgun and threatened to shoot the woman and forced her to drive him and the children at gunpoint to Country Fair, so he could purchase alcohol.
“Once they arrived, the male stayed in the vehicle while the female calmly walked into the store and asked the clerk to call the police because ‘He has a gun, and my kids are in the car,’" Olean police wrote in a Facebook post.
Police said the woman told them KingsBerry had drank two pints of Bacardi rum, had been using cocaine, was inside the car with the children with a handgun and had mentioned that he intended to have a shootout with police because he wanted to die before the age of 27.
“The officers at this scene were forced to display their weapons ‘justifiably’ to protect the victims, the public at large, as well as themselves,” police wrote in the Facebook post. “The situation thankfully ended peacefully, and an arrest was made on behalf of the victim in this case.”
