ALLEGANY, NY – Lauren Schifley of Allegany was one of 10 Canisius College students who completed a weeklong service immersion in Erie, Pennsylvania, during the college's Winter Service Week in early January. Schifley is a 2023 integrated marketing and communication major.

The students stayed at the monastery of the Benedictine Sisters of Erie and experienced the sisters' daily life of prayer. The students also participated in the sisters' ministries throughout the city each day.

Volunteer opportunities included education centers for adults and children, a community center for disabled adults, after-school programs for underprivileged children, a children's art house, soup kitchens and food banks. The students spent their evenings with the sisters reflecting on the experiences of the day.

The purpose of the college's service-immersion experiences is to increase student awareness of the world. Students challenge themselves to live simply, to value relationships, to engage their faith and spirituality and to dig for the truth behind the injustices.

The annual trip to Erie is one of three domestic service-immersions arranged by campus ministry at Canmisius and offered during Winter Service Week.
