On the day the Most Rev. Richard J. Malone resigned as Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo, Rep. Tom Reed said that it is time to focus on the future.

“The bottom line is that this has a been a very dark time, not only in Buffalo, but across the Catholic religion,” Reed said during his Wednesday media call. “I’m a proud Catholic, and, as a proud Catholic, I am glad to see that we are trying to move forward in a way that is positive.”

Reed said that although it is important to look to the future, victims of clergy abuse must be supported and clergy must be held responsible for their actions.

“I’m glad were moving forward, and we should always stand with the victims of these heinous actions, that happened at the hands of priest and others,” Reed said. “It is good to see that accountability is happening.”

Reed noted that the most important goal for the Catholic Church as it moves forward should be to prevent such abuse from happening again.

“We, as a whole, need to make sure things like this don’t happen again.”
