ALLEGANY, NY – The Allegany Limestone boys basketball team defeated Genesee Valley 73-64 on Tuesday night.
The Gator’s 9-point win was not an easy one. Genesee Valley kept fighting back despite being down by double digits for a good portion of the game.
ALS (1-0) got out to a quick start with an 8-2 lead within the first four minutes of the quarter.
After the Jaguars pulled within one, the Gators ended the quarter on a 14-4 run to go up 22-11.
Allegany-Limestone carried that momentum into the second quarter. After Genesee Valley pulled within single digits again, the Gators would go on an 13-6 run to end the half, topped by Casey Curran's converting an "and-one" with eight seconds left.
The Gators came out strong in the third as a few buckets, including a pair of threes from Gus Napoleon, put them up 14, 51-37, with three minutes left.
Napoleon led the way for the Gators, scoring 29 points.
In the fourth, the game was more back-and-fourth, with both teams going on small runs as the Jaguars tried to mount a comeback.
That comeback would finally happen when, after being down seven with just under three-and-a-half minutes to go, Genesee Valley went on a 7-0 run to make it a 68-64 game.
That was the closest the Jaguars got; the Gators ended the game on a 5-0 run of their own.
Genesee Valley (0-1) was led by Evan Windus, who dropped 29.
Allegany-Limestone’s next game is Monday. The team will take on Pioneer at home.
