ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — The centennial season of St. Bonaventure men’s basketball has brought Bona fans many special, reflective moments thus far, but none more important than the 50th anniversary of the 1970 final four team.

Much more than just a 73-45 victory over Hofstra was celebrated Saturday. Legacy and tradition were too.

In front of a capacity crowd, the Bonnies of today shined in front of legends of the past. With Bona greats like Bob Lanier, Billy Kalbaugh and Jim Satalin in town, the team didn’t want to disappoint.

Sophomore center Osun Osunniyi used his experiences with the 1970 team as a learning experience to better himself on and off the court.

“I took a lot of advice in,” Osunniyi said. “Just talking with them about what it was like when they were at school here, and it what it took for them to get to where they got. We took what they told us and brought it into the locker room.”

Sophomore guard Jaren English said much of the same. With legends watching, English knew he and his team had to come up big.

“It’s truly an honor to be in their presence,” English said. “We hear about it every day. Coach Schmidt reiterates it to us every day. We need to play for everyone in this town and the people who played before us. I think we did that today, and came out with a little extra punch.”

Playing in front of Lanier, an NBA Hall of Fame member, was English’s highlight.

“They paved the way for us,” he said. “The court is named after Bob Lanier, and we play on it every day. It’s an honor to get on that court. Not everyone has this opportunity. Today, we did in front of the greats. A Final Four team. Pros.”

To Coach Mark Schmidt, it couldn’t have been better. The win, the experiences. Everything. To Schmidt, it was just another great day to be a Bonnie.

“It couldn’t have been better,” Schmidt said. “With the Final Four team here, for our guys to go out and play the way they did, I am really proud of their efforts. It was a tremendous crowd. It was a great day to be a Bonnie.”

Welcome back, Bob
