ST. BONAVENTURE, NY — The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team won its sixth straight game Wednesday, defeating Big 4 rival Niagara University 87-70. The Purple Eagles had won each of the previous two meetings against the Bonnies.
The red-hot Bonnies (7-4) were led by six double-digit scorers, two of whom came off the bench.
Sophomore guard Dominick Welch, who leads the team in scoring with 141 points, scored 17 points on five 3-pointers and two free-throws. His counterpart, Kyle Lofton, notched his third consecutive double-double performance, scoring 12 points to go along with 11 assists.
Rounding out the collective effort for the Bonnies, senior forward Amadi Ikpeze scored 11 points while freshman forward Justin Winston scored 10. Off the bench, sophomore center Osun Osunniyi scored 13 points, and freshman guard Alejandro Vasquez tallied 14.
The Purple Eagles (2-7) struggled in the 17-point defeat, shooting 8-24 from 3-point territory and 21-51 overall while being out-rebounded 39-22.
Hammond Marcus led the way for Niagara, scoring 21 points while sinking all nine of his free-throw attempts.
Up next for the Bonnies is a road trip to Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where they will take on Middle Tennessee State University at 2 p.m. Saturday.
