OLEAN, NY – In what undoubtedly was their most important win of the season, the Olean Oilers defeated the Mansfield Destroyers 8-4 at home Saturday. With the result, the Oilers clinched the third seed in the NYCBL Western Division Playoff Bracket.
The Oilers got it started in the bottom of the second as they pushed across the first four runs of the game. Right fielder Tyler Phillips singled in shortstop Brandon Myers after Olean scored its first run on an error by Mansfield second baseman Grant Vera. The last two runs of the inning crossed on bases-loaded walks by Dylan Vincent and Noah Weiner, scoring Adam Moore and Phillips.
The Oilers sealed the deal in the bottom of the bottom of the seventh on RBIs from Myers, Moore and Victor. The Destroyers were unable to answer for the rest of the game, and the Oilers accumulated their eighteenth victory of the summer and a playoff berth, which had seemed quite unimaginable when they sat in dead last for the better part of the first half of the summer.
NYCBL All-Star Jack Collins started on the mound for the Oilers and turned in a solid outing. However, it was Brandon Concevitch who got the win and the save on the hill.
The Oilers will face the Destroyers in a one-game playoff Monday. The winner of that game will face the Niagara Power for the division championship.
The Oilers will play their last regular season game on Sunday at 2 p.m. against the Genesee Rapids at the Kerr Pegula Athletic Complex in Houghton.
