OLEAN, NY — The 13th annual Gus Macker basketball tournament, scheduled for the first weekend of June, has been postponed until June 2021 as a safety precaution for the COVID-19 pandemic.
Olean has been a local host of this nationwide three-on-three basketball tournament for 12 years in a row, and the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce officials "is committed to hosting year 13 ...,” chamber officials said in a press release. “Our major sponsors have pledged their continued support and we look forward to hosting this wonderful community event June 5-6, 2021."
Meme Krahe Yanetsko, the GOACC chief operating officer, said Gus Macker officials have been in contact with all organizers since March.
“The Macker committee and our board moved the event to June (this year) as August has been tough for commitments of high school and college students,” Yanetsko said. “We felt the best decision was to postpone this year and make it a bigger and better one in 2021.”
The Gus Macker is for male and female athletes, young or old, experienced or inexperienced. Since expanding in 1987, over 2.2 million athletes have competed in 972 Gus Macker tournaments on driveway-like courts in cities across America.
