HACKENSACK, NJ – A 17-year-old accused of conducting an armed robbery was struck by a hit-and-run driver Tuesday afternoon while he was attempting to flee from police.
Just before 4:30 p.m., the teen – who was wanted on warrants related to an Oct. 26, 2018 armed robbery with a handgun – was spotted by officers on Polifly Road, Capt. Darrin DeWitt said in a press release.
When police began searching the area, a witness informed officers the suspect was hiding underneath a vehicle in the parking lot of a local liquor store, DeWitt said.
After an officer approached the car, the teen ran and attempted to cross the street but was struck by a car heading south on Polifly Road, the captain said.
The teen was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries and then arrested on his previous warrants, as well as charged with resisting arrest, according to DeWitt.
Authorities are continuing their search for the driver involved in Tuesday’s incident and believe the vehicle is a newer, dark colored Hyundai Santa Fe with New Jersey license plates. The vehicle, which police believe is either brown or pewter, is also missing the driver side mirror, the captain said.
Anyone with information related to the vehicle or driver is asked to contact Hackensack Police at 201-646-7777.
