HACKENSACK, N.J. — Bergen County residents: Beware of phone scams.

If you receive a phone call from someone purporting to be a member of the Bergen County Sheriff's Office asking for money, a wire transfer, or prepaid gift cards, or threatens you with arrest for failing to appear for an outstanding summons or jury duty, Bergen County Sheriff Anthony Cureton has two words for residents: hang up.

"The Bergen County Sheriff's Office, along with all law enforcement agencies, will never threaten arrest and demand payment via telephone," said Sheriff Cureton. "If you receive a call of this nature, hang up immediately."
