HACKENSACK- A psychologist who worked in several New Jersey school districts, including Hackensack, has been accused of sexually abusing a child, authorities said.
Dr. Lorenzo Puertas, 78, was arrested Wednesday and charged with two counts of sexual assault by sexual contact and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, according to Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo.
Bergen County authorities launched an investigation on March 19 after receiving a report from the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office that Puertas sexually assaulted a child under the age of 13 on more than one occasion in Franklin Lakes, Calo said.
Puertas is a Franklin Lakes resident and executive director of Psych-Ed Services, Inc., a mental healthcare provider that provides services such as pre-employment psych screenings and child study team evaluations.
According to the business’s website, Psych-Ed Services, Inc. has worked with local school districts including Hackensack and Lakewood. The site also lists the Bergen and Passaic county freeholder boards as clients.
Puertas was scheduled for his first court hearing last week, authorities said.
