HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A 69-year-old Hackensack man who struck a senior citizen and a woman in the parking lot of a business specializing in children’s birthday parties has been arrested and charged with assault by auto.

Before 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, the Paramus Police Department arrived at the parking lot of Catch Air on Route 4 East where they observed Gary Mongelli’s 2015 Nissan Versa in the center of the intersection of Sheperd Way and the lot entrance. According to a press release from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Mongelli was backing out of a parking space when he struck two women, 65 and 33. The relationship of the women is unclear.

After hitting the pair, investigators say Mongelli continued driving, again striking the 33-year-old woman before his vehicle came to a stop in the intersection. The victims were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where they were treated for serious injuries. The elderly woman was released on Tuesday and the 33-year-old remains hospitalized and in stable condition.

Following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office with assistance from the Paramus Police Department and the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, Mongelli was charged with two counts of assault by auto, a fourth-degree crime. He is due in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack on November 6.
