HACKENSACK, NJ - An automobile accident Tuesday morning had Hackensack first responders at the Firestone Complete Auto Shop as one of the automobiles involved crashed into the building.
At approximately 9 a.m., Hackensack Police were dispatched to the area of River Street and University Plaza Drive for motor vehicle accident with one vehicle impacting a commercial building, Firestone, 540 River Street, according to Captain Nick Foley.
The collision occurred when a 2016 Honda Pilot, driven by Maria Gonzalez, 67, of Hackensack, made a right-hand turn from University Plaza onto River Street, cutting off a 2008 Nissan Altima traveling south on Hackensack Avenue, as it entered the intersection of River and University. (Hackensack Avenue becomes River Street at this intersection.) The Altima, driven by William Geraghty, 76, of River Edge, struck the back bumper of the Pilot. Gonzalez reportedly struck the gas causing her vehicle to accelerate, striking a curb and continuing off the roadway and into the front window of Firestone, rolling onto its side in the process.
A 22-year-old customer inside the business was struck by flying glass, sustaining a laceration above his left eye, but refused medical attention. Gonzales was taken to the hospital with chest and leg pain. Geraghty was uninjured.
The Hackensack Building Department responded to the scene and determined that the building did not sustain structural damage. No summonses have been issued at this time.
