HACKENSACK, N.J. -- City resident Chrissi Shewchuk will appear on tonight's episode of "Man Vs. Bear," a new series that premiered last Wednesday on the Discovery Channel.

Every week, three Grizzly bears -- Bart, Honey Bump and Tank -- will compete in various challenges against three human competitors at a Utah sanctuary where strength, speed and stamina are tested. The challenges are based on the grizzlies' predatory skills and actions and include a game of tug-of-war and using brute force to roll logs.

"You can't train for something like this," said Shewchuck, 32. "You wouldn’t know how to begin to train. I had no delusions. For me, it wasn't a matter of, 'Can I beat a bear?' It was a matter of, 'Can I hang on longer than my competitors?'"

Shewchuk, who graduated Hackensack High School in 2005, is an army veteran, a pediatric nurse by trade, and a daredevil by nature. She is a regular competitor in the Spartan Obstacle Course Races, a global leader in obstacle course racing that challenges participants past their limits.

In the final round of the show, the top two competitors will come face-to-face with the 8-foot, 6-inch-tall, 1,400-pound Bart. The human competitor who earns the most points of the day will be named champion.

The series will also include blow-by-blow commentary from on-the-ground experts Brandon Tierney, host of CBS Sports Radio's nationally syndicated show "Tiki and Tierney" and wildlife expert Casey Anderson who has lived with bears for most of his life.

At the end of the season, the top three competitors who have the most points will return one last time for the super-human showdown against the bears.

Will Shewchuk stand a chance against her competitors as they challenge these towering beasts? Find out tonight when the episode airs on the Discovery Channel at 9 p.m.
