HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A 36-year-old Passaic man is facing charges after he left the scene of a motor vehicle accident in Hackensack that caused serious injury to a man who remains in critical condition.
After 12:30 a.m. on July 9, Hackensack police officers responded to a report of an injured pedestrian who had been lying on the street at the intersection of Polifly Road and Sutton Avenue.
The 27-year-old man, whom the Prosecutor’s Office did not identify, was unconscious and sustained multiple injuries consistent with being struck by a vehicle. He was then transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he remains in critical condition.
After an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Accident Investigations Unit and the Hackensack Police Department, the perpetrator, Juan Gonzalez, was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in serious bodily injury, a third-degree crime; endangering an injured victim, a third-degree crime; and hindering apprehension, a fourth-degree crime.
Gonzalez was transported to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
