PARAMUS, N.J. — A booze-fueled altercation on the front lawn of a Paramus home between two men turned deadly this morning when one of the men pulled a knife out on the other and stabbed him.

Shortly after midnight today, three Paramus police officers rushed to an East Ridgewood Avenue home upon receipt of a 911 call to find 35-year-old Luis Cruz lying on the front lawn of his home with a “severe stab wound to his abdomen.” The assailant, Jose Vasquez-Gonzalez, 49, of Passaic, fled the scene on foot before cops showed and headed towards the Fashion Center Shopping Mall.

Meanwhile, Cruz was transported to the Hackensack University Medical Center by the Paramus EMS and is in serious, but stable condition, according to a press release from Paramus Police Chief Kenneth R. Ehrenberg.

By a twist of fate, a Bergen New Bridge Medical Center EMS ambulance had been in the parking lot of the Fashion Center Shopping Mall when they observed Vasquez-Gonzalez trying to make a run for it in the lot. Two police officers arrived to the mall and arrested him after a brief scuffle.

Vasquez-Gonzalez was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and terroristic threats.

He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail for a bail hearing.
