HACKENSACK, N.J. — The mother of Christian Pacas, the 22-year-old Hackensack man who was murdered outside a Grove Street home in the city late last month, has created a GoFundMe page in hopes of raising $20,000 to offset the costs of a memorial for her late son.

To date, $8,895 has been raised by 194 donors.

“In the early morning of December 22, 2019, a sweet and loving life was unexpectedly taken from us,” writes Maria Pacas on the page. “Christian Pacas was a loving son, loyal brother, a true friend, a first-time uncle, and a spirited life that had big dreams for himself and his family. Anyone that knew him knew how true he was to himself and that is something anyone can say is extremely rare. He always had a way to make you laugh, smile, and lift you up.”

She continued, “He was somebody’s baby that was taken in a way that no one ever deserves. It feels like the whole world around us is aching for him. WE are aching for him to come back.”

Maria said nothing could have prepared her for the devastation -- an “inconceivable reality” -- that the Pacas and Flores families have endured following her son’s untimely passing.

“However, with the Lord’s help and the support of loved ones, we are trying to make sense of this all and be at peace that he is resting,” she wrote. “We now have a guardian angel watching over us.”

On December 23, police arrested suspect 20-year-old Jairo Echeverry in Brooklyn and charged him with murder in the death of Pacas, along with one count each of possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and possession of a handgun without a permit. His accomplice, Brian Guerrero, of Paramus, was also arrested and charged with hindering apprehension.

Both men, who are unemployed, had been awaiting extradition from Brooklyn, according to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office.

A wake for Pacas was held at G. Thomas Gentile Funeral Service in Hackensack on December 27.
