HACKENSACK, NJ -- City officials on Tuesday, Jan. 14 received a certificate of recognition from Peter Lupo, a Veteran and Vice President of Public Affairs and Legislative Outreach for the NJ Veterans Chamber, recognizing Hackensack’s efforts to support veteran-owned businesses.

The Veteran Friendly Municipality certification is earned by passing a resolution to award 6% of public contract dollars to veteran-owned businesses and to achieve a workforce composed of 5% veterans. Hackensack’s resolution to meet these benchmarks also designates three veteran-only parking spaces in municipal parking areas and a promise to proactively notify veteran-owned businesses of upcoming bids and contract opportunity.

“I have a great deal of respect for veterans and everything that they do to keep us safe,” said Mayor John Labrosse. “Veterans have the experience and work ethic to contribute in meaningful ways to our communities when they return home from serving our country. We must continue to support these heroes any way that we can so that they have a smooth transition back into civilian life.”

Lupo, who first approached the council in early December about encouraging more veteran-owned business participation in public project bids, expressed his gratitude to the city for its recognition of veterans' sacrifices and the challenges faced by veteran-owned businesses.

“I would like to thank the City of Hackensack for all that they do to support veterans in their community,” said Lupo. “The Mayor and Council have been extremely receptive to our suggestions and have quickly begun implementing policies that encourage Veteran business participation in Hackensack.”
