HACKENSACK, N.J. -- Authorities arrested a Bronx, New York, man and charged him with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
The Division of Child Protection and Permanency on October 23 phoned the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit to inform them of the admittance of twin infants to the Hackensack University Medical Center by their mother. According to a news release from the Prosecutor's Office, both of the infants sustained multiple fractures and head trauma and one appeared to be unresponsive.
A joint investigation by the Prosecutor's Office and the Teaneck Police Department under the direction of Chiefs Robert Anzilotti and Glenn M. O'Reilly, respectively, found that the infants were in the custody of their father, 27-year-old Jonathan Melendez, a television production worker, when the injuries occurred. Melendez was arrested while at the hospital on October 25.
One infant is in stable condition; the other is in critical condition.
Melendez's first court appearance was today at the Central Judicial Processing Court.
