HACKENSACK, NJ -- A 53-year-old Fair Lawn woman who served a stint in the Saddle Brook School District as an assistant counselor, has been arrested and issued several assault charges stemming from her alleged engagement in sexual conduct with a student.

Ellen Terpening was charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, aggravated sexual contact and endangering the welfare of a child following an investigation by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Police Services and the Fair Lawn Police Department. 

The arrest was made in Paramus after the Bergen County Sheriff’s Department received a report on October 8 that Terpening had engaged in sexual conduct with a student while she served as student assistant counselor at Brownstone School in Saddle Brook for 18 months dating back to September 2016 to March 2018. The assault also occurred at her Fair Lawn home after she left her role at the school. According to a news release from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, Terpening is divorced and has served as an animal rescue worker.

Her first court appearance at Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack was on October 9.
