HACKENSACK, NJ - Amid the first heat wave of the season, the air conditioning at Bergen County Jail is undergoing emergency repairs after four inmates suffered from heat-related conditions, officials said.

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, Bergen County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Derek Sands said while a mechanical issue with jail’s heating, ventilation and cooling system is being fixed, parts of the facility have been left with limited cooling capabilities.

During the interim, emergency accommodations have been made to ensure inmates and staff have a suitable environment, a plan that includes temporary cooling locations and housing reassignments, he said.

Officials began monitoring the situation over the weekend and any reports of heat-related symptoms will be treated by the jail's medical staff, Sands said.
