HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The Bronx, N.Y. father who authorities arrested and charged with two counts each of aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of his twin infants last week has now been charged with aggravated manslaughter after one of the twins, who was in critical condition, died on October 31.

According to a press release from the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, personnel at Hackensack University Medical Center advised the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Special Victims Unit that one of the infants had succumbed to injuries.

A joint investigation led by the Prosecutor’s Office and the Teaneck Police Department deemed the injuries, which included “multiple fractures and head trauma,” were sustained while the children were in the custody of their biological father, 27-year-old Jonathan Melendez, of Teaneck. One of the twin infants was pronounced dead at 12:10 p.m. The other is in stable condition.
