HACKENSACK – A house fire that broke out late Monday morning in Hackensack claimed the life of a pet dog, according to authorities.

Just before 11:50 a.m., fire crews were dispatched to 11 Shafer Place for a reported house fire, Fire Capt. Justin Derevyanik said.

The blaze, which took about 15 minutes for firefighters to extinguish, sent the home’s female occupant to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation, he said. A dog that lived in the home perished, but firefighters were able to save a pet cat, he said.

Preliminary investigation by the city’s fire prevention bureau has ruled the fire does not appear to be suspicious at this time, Derevyanik said.

Along with Hackensack Fire Department, firefighters from Englewood and Teaneck, along with Hackensack Police, HackensackUMC EMTs and Hackensack Building Department also responded to the scene.
