HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A 78-year-old Fairview woman who investigators say had been jaywalking, was struck and killed today by a motorist in the city.

According to a new release from the Hackensack Police Department, officers were dispatched to Johnson Avenue at 6:44 a.m. on a report of a pedestrian who was struck by a vehicle driven by Tyler Samra, a 25-year-old Fair Lawn man. The victim, identified as Vilman Tasciyan, was unresponsive after failed resuscitation efforts in the form of CPR were administered by an off-duty EMT, which police resumed upon their arrival.

Tasciyan was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead within an hour of the accident. An investigation by the Hackensack Police Traffic Bureau and the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office Fatal Accident Investigation Unit, which responded to and processed the scene of the accident with the assistance of Bergen County Sheriff’s BCI, determined that the victim had been crossing Johnson Avenue “enroute to No. 172 in an area not marked for pedestrian crossing.” Samra’s 2010 GMC Terrain had been heading northbound when he accidentally struck the victim. Police said Samra did not see the victim when the accident occurred.

The investigation is ongoing.
