HACKENSACK, N.J. -- The 19-year-old woman who police found dead in a parking garage in Hackensack Saturday morning died of compression injuries to her neck, authorities said.
Michael Gaffney, 21, of Maywood, was arrested and charged with one count of reckless manslaughter following an investigation by the Hackensack Police Department and the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, which determined that the victim, Francis Victoria Garcia, of Bloomingdale, was in the rear seat of the vehicle with Gaffney at the time of her death. An autopsy determined that “compression injuries to her neck” were the cause of her death.
City police first discovered Garcia’s body at 2:14 a.m. on November 2 after the Hackensack Police Department received a 911 call that an unresponsive woman was located in a vehicle in a parking garage at the apartment complex of 140 Prospect Avenue in Hackensack. Garcia was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.
Gaffney was remanded to Bergen County Jail and is due in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack at an undisclosed date.
An investigation is ongoing.
