HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A 47-year-old laborer from Paterson is facing charges for vehicular homicide after he allegedly struck and killed a Hackensack man last night near the Bergen County Justice Center before driving off.

After 8 p.m. Friday, the Hackensack Police Department received word of a pedestrian who had been struck in front of 60 Court Street, an office building that neighbors the Bergen County Justice Center. Upon arrival, the struck pedestrian, who police identified as city resident James Dixon, was found lying unconscious on the street. He was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Following an investigation conducted between the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hackensack Police Department, city police today arrested Fabio Campos Azofeifa, a laborer from Paterson, and charged him with one count of vehicular homicide and one count of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident, both second-degree crimes. He was also issued a motor vehicle summons for driving under the influence.

He was transported to the Bergen County Jail pending a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack.
