HACKENSACK, N.J. — Two juveniles who were in a stolen Mercedes-Benz were arrested last week following a police pursuit in Hackensack, while the driver of another stolen Jeep got away.

According to a news release from the Hackensack Police Department, Detective Lieutenant Michael Antista was on patrol on Friday, December 13 when he observed a 2015 Mercedes-Benz E350 and a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee run a red traffic light on First Street by Hackensack High School. After running a license plate check of the Benz, it was determined the car was reportedly stolen from South Plainfield.

Antista attempted to stop both vehicles, but the drivers ignored the cop and started speeding at 70 mph on Polifly Road in an attempt to elude police.

A red traffic light near the ramp of Route 80 caused the Mercedes-Benz to come to a stop, after which Officer Kley Peralta and Antista apprehended the driver, a 16-year-old Newark juvenile, and the passenger, a 15-year-old juvenile from Kearny, and placed them into custody following a "brief struggle."

Meanwhile, the driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee managed to get away after striking a vehicle that was stopped in traffic. The driver then drove onto the sidewalk and fled on Polifly Road. No one was injured. The Jeep was reportedly stolen from Hackensack and later recovered in Kearny.

Juvenile complaints were signed against the Newark juvenile for receiving stolen property, possession of marijuana, eluding, and conspiracy to commit theft. The juvenile was also issued several motor vehicle summonses before being remanded to Bergen County Juvenile Detention Center.

The Kearny juvenile was issued complaints for receiving stolen property, joyriding, possession of marijuana, possession of a knife, unlawful possession of a weapon, and conspiracy to commit theft. He was released to his mother’s custody from the police station.
