EWING, NJ --  A properly installed child safety seat can save a young life. That is why the Mercer County Sheriff Jack Kemler recently announced the upcoming child car seat check-up event, the law enforcement professional said in a statement.  

The inspection event will be held by the Mercer County Sheriff's Office alonghe Ewing Township Police Department on Saturday, September 21, from 10:00 am – 1:30 pm at the West Trenton Volunteer Fire Company, 40 W. Upper Ferry Road in Ewing Township. The event is being held to coincide with National Child Passenger Safety Week.  

The nationwide event strives to remind parents, grandparents, and caregivers of the need to keep children of all ages properly restrained in a car seat. The program is funded by a grant from the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety to help properly secure children in a motorized vehicle.

“We are grateful to have secured a state grant for this important child safety matter,” said Kemler. “There is just a brief wait for a family to have their car seat inspected and the entire safety check usually takes no more than ten minutes."  

According to Safe Kids Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of unintentional deaths to childre in the United States.  In 2016, 3,183 children died in motor vehicle accidents nationwide per the organization. 

An installed and properly used child safety seat can decrease the risk of a fatal injury by 71 percent among infants; 54 percent among toddlers; and 45 percent among chlidren aged four to eight.  

Participants can ask questions and receive hands-on instruction from certified technicians on the proper use of both car and booster seats. The technicians also will provide information on how to choose the right type of car seat for a child’s age and size; how to correctly install the seat in their vehicle; and how to use that seat correctly every time.

Each complimentary check-up will take place in the order of arrival and is available to all Mercer County residents.
