Now that adult-use marijuana is legal in New Jersey, it seems policymakers are so consumed with setting up that market that they have forgotten about medical marijuana patients entirely. Medical marijuana has been legal in New Jersey for over a decade, but the market is underdeveloped with just 14 dispensaries to meet the needs of the state’s110,000 registered medical cannabis patients. Not only is this lack of competition making it very difficult for patients to access the treatment they need, but it is also making it more expensive. In fact, the cost of medical cannabis in New Jersey is amongst the highest in the nation.
New Jersey patients deserve better. As a senior who suffers from chronic pain, I deserve better. The Murphy Administration should issue more medical marijuana permits now so when adult-use sales launch later this year, patients are first in line to get the treatment they need and can get it at an affordable cost.
