HAMILTON, NJ --  A sudden medical leave by Hamilton Animal Shelter and Adoption Center Director Marion Mumford has caused the cancellation of a Friday meeting by a Hamilton Township Council subcommittee overseeing the facility, officials said.

The cancellation comes a week after Mumford was unable to attend an evening meeting before the committee. Township Business Administrator Dave Kenny cited Mumford's child care needs and stated at the time that "Ms. Mumford has no problem attending during the day."

Council Vice President Rick Tighe and Councilwoman Ileana Schirmer had requested attendance confirmation by the close of business on Wednesday. Citing no confirmation from the Township Administration, Tighe and Schirmer announced that they were cancelling the coming session and called on Mayor Yaede to instead appear before the next full meeting of the Hamilton Township Council on September 17.

“The sole purpose of this Committee meeting would have been to update the public on the issues at the Shelter” said Tighe.  “The Mayor promised her cooperation and the attendance of her Shelter Manager if a meeting was scheduled during business hours,” said Tighe.  “There are still criminal charges pending due to malfeasance at the Animal Shelter.  The public deserves to be updated on changes that have been made at the shelter, work that still needs to be done and the Mayor’s plans for the shelter over the next year.”

“It is unbelievable that Mayor Yaede is unwilling to be transparent or to take any responsibility for various problems in the Township that have developed on her watch” said Schirmer.  “The wheels seem to be falling off the Yaede administration. Now, the Mayor needs to explain to Council and to the public why she is allowing one of the Township’s employees to disregard a legally binding subpoena.

"The township residents need to ask themselves: what is Mayor Yaede hiding? She is doing everything within her power to make sure these meetings don't take place," said Schirmer.

Messages for Hamilton Township Business Admisntrator Dave Kenny were not returned by the time of this story's publication.
