HAMILTON, NJ -- When Jeff Martin was sworn as Mayor of Hamilton Township he vacated his seat on the Township Council, necessitating a vote by members of the Hamilton Township Democratic Committee to bring the legislative body back to capacity.
Under New Jersey state law, within 14 days of a vacancy on a local township council, the elected county committee members of the political party from the same party as the individual vacating the seat, must meet to choose a replacement. On Saturday, those committee members, are expected to meet and vote on potential replacements. There are approximately 110 current elected democratic committee people eligible to vote in the selection process.
The top three voter-getters at Saturday's convention will be presented to the current Township council members who are then expected to select one at a regular meeting. No date has been set for the Township Council vote.
The selected council member will serve until the end of December 2020.
