HAMILTON, NJ -- People stood on their porches and dotted Hamilton's Elmore Avenue, albeit keeping their social distance, to come together Monday in celebration of long-time neighbor, and World War II veteran, Frank Uveges's 100th Birthday.  The "Drive-By Birthday Parade" was organized by fellow veterans at Hamilton's VFW Post 3525 to honor Frank since the spread of the coronavirus forced his party to be canceled.

Members of the VFW decorated Uveges's home where he has lived since 1940 with balloons and flags for the special day. Neighbors waved flags and displayed homemade Happy Birthday banners as cars drove down the street honking their horns and drivers waved hello.

Well-wishers joined in singing "Happy Birthday" and joyfully shouted from the sidewalks and streets.

"We  love you Frankie!", "God Bless you, Frank!", "Thank you for all you've done!" , "What's your secret?"  One man could be heard declaring that the celebrant is "an American hero."

The out-pouring of love for a man still vibrant at 100 was palpable. Two men were heard talking about how they knew Frank "I sit with him sometimes at the Hibos and listen to his stories" one shared.

Uveges, the son of Hungarian immigrants, joined the Unites States Army in the midst of World War II and went on to serve in southern France, the German Rhineland, and the Ardennes in Belgium. During his service, he earned a Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and three Battle Stars during his time military career for acts of bravery.

He spent his career in the construction trades and raised his family in Hamilton -- two children Mary Margaret, who also lives in Hamilton, Frank II, three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Frank is currently staying home to avoid the coronavirus, but his younger brother Jim, 86, still visits him daily.  In addition to being a lifetime member of VFW Post 3525, Frank is a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, the Hamilton Knights of Columbus #6213 as a 4th Degree Knight, Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Catholic War Veterans, and the American Legion.

Anyone who would like to join in wishing Frank well can send birthday cards to the VFW Post 3525 located at 77 Christine Avenue, Hamilton, NJ 08619. The Post members will be sure to get them to him.
