HAMILTON, NJ --  Buying a home can be daunting, especially if you've never done it before. That's why Mercer County is helping families achieve that American dream of owning a home through their First-Time Homebuyer Program workshops.

On Thursday, Mercer County Executive Brian Hughes announced the second Homebuyer workshop this year to be held on September 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Hamilton Township Free Public Library located at 1 Justice Samuel A. Alito, Jr. Way.

“Mercer County is again offering assistance to potential homeowners through our First-Time Homebuyer Program, and I invite you to sit in on this workshop to learn more about the lending process,” County Executive Brian M. Hughes said.

Workshop participants can learn how the mortgage process works through lenders who will be on-hand to guide applicants and provide answers. First-time homebuyers may be eligible to obtain down-payment and closing-cost assistance through the program.

Eligibility for assistance is based on family size and income, and lenders will help determine mortgage eligibility based on income, credit rating and current monthly expenses.

To receive assistance through the Mercer County First-Time Homebuyer Program, applicants must participate in a Homebuyer Training Course, can not have owned a home within the past three years — unless that person is a single parent or displaced homemaker — and can not own other real estate at the time of closing.

More information about the First-Time Homebuyer program is available by contacting the Mercer County Housing Office at (609) 989-6858.
