LAWRENCE TOWNSHIP, NJ -- Route 1 was closed in both directions for about three hours Friday.
According to officials, contractors working in the area struck a gas line along the highway near the Mercer Mall and the very busy swath of Route 1 between I-295 and Quakerbridge Road causing a gas leak.
Fire Departments from Lawrence Township and Hamilton Township quickly responded to the scene while crews from Public Service Energy and Gas (PSE&G) went to work to cap the leak and make the area safe.
According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, the roadway was totally reopened around 11:30 am.
