BRISTOL, CT – Hot weather combined with hotter bats on Saturday as Robbinsville opened the Little League Softball Eastern Region Championship with an 8-2 win over Rhode Island.
After the teams ended the first inning tied at two apiece, Robbinsville jumped back on top with two more in the second. Following a walk by Jordyn Pepper and bunt single by Abby Veisz, Lily Ondy sacrificed to move the runners up. Riley Mikolajczak reached on an error scoring Pepper, and heads-up baserunning by pinch runner Madison Manning gave Robbinsville a two run lead.
With the lead, and backed by strong fielding, pitcher Katie Ziliani found her groove scattering three Rhode Island hits over the next five innings. Robbinsville tacked on another run in the third on a booming RBI double by Juleesa Alvarado. The girls broke the game open with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by a single and two stolen bases from Sorella Gallucci.
Gallucci ended the day going 4-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Caroline Walls and Abby Veisz had two hits each. Ziliani pitched six strong innings, striking out four.
The team now advances in the winner's bracket of the tournament to play the Pennslyvania state champions from South Williamsport, PA at 10:00am on Sunday.
