MORRISTOWN, NJ - Gia Russa Unseasoned Whole Grain Bread Crumbs and Gia Russa Italian Seasoned Whole Grain Bread Crumbs are being recalled because they may contain undeclared walnuts and pecans, announced the FDA in a press release.
The recalled products, with a net weight of 10 oz., have “best by” dates of 08/21/2019, 09/21/2019, 10/04/2019, 11/09/2019, 11/12/2019, 12/05/2019. People who have a tree nut allergy or severe sensitivity, should not consume the recalled product as it may cause a serious or life-threatening reaction, said officials.
A consumer complaint triggered the recall, said the release. ICCO Cheese Company, Inc. (ICCO) of Orangeburg, New York, maufacturer of Gia Russa bread crumbs, informed the FDA and launched an investigation.
"We immediately contacted ICCO leadership, who informed the Food and Drug Administration" said company officials., "Independent laboratory tests commissioned separately by ICCO and by the consumer both indicated trace amounts of pecan and walnut in the provided whole grain bread crumb samples. We are fully cooperating with the FDA investigation to identify the source of the problem".
According to reports, the source of the tree nut allergen is believed to be the bread used by a supplier of the bread crumbs used by ICCO to repack the product. There has been one reported allergic reaction to date, associated with the consumption of the Whole Grain Bread Crumbs.
The Zidian Group supplies Gia Russa whole grain bread crumbs nationwide through wholesale distributors and retail stores.
“We have worked with ICCO for more than 10 years and this is the first allergen complaint we have received in that time about this or any Gia Russa product,” said Pat Meehan, COO, Zidian Group. “We are doing everything we can to help ICCO get these lots of whole grain bread crumbs out of distribution because our first priority is always the health and safety of everyone who uses our products.”
The company is urging customers to check their cabinets and if found, to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact Gia Russa at 1-888-794-3426.
