Hackensack Resident Charged with Sexual Assualt and Child Endangerment at YMCA

HACKENSACK, NJ - Acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced the arrest of Timothy Smith of Hackensack on six counts each of Sexual Assault by Contact and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The arrest is the result of an investigation conducted by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office under the direction of Chief Robert Anzilotti, and the Hackensack Police Department under the direction of Officer-in-Charge, Captain Francesco Aquila.

Smith's address was listed as 360 Main Street in Hackensack, which is the address of the Hackensack YMCA.

On Friday, February 16, 2018, the Hackensack Police Department was contacted via 9-1- 1 that children at an indoor public pool in Hackensack, NJ had been touched on their intimate parts by Smith during a public swim program. The Hackensack Police Department responded. An investigation was initiated by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office and the Hackensack Police Department.

As a result of the investigation, Smith was arrested on February 23, 2018 in Hackensack, NJ and charged with six counts each of Sexual Assault by Contact, N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2B, a crime of the 2nd degree; and Endangering the Welfare of a Child, N.J.S.A. 2C:24A(1), a crime of the 3rd degree. Smith is scheduled for a first appearance in Central Judicial Processing in Hackensack, New Jersey on Saturday,  February 24, 2018 at 9:00 A.M.

The Hackensack YMCA is part of the largest association of YMCAs in the State of New Jersey, the Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges, which six YMCA branches including those in East Orange, Stillwater, Hardyston, Livingston, Maplewood, and Wayne.

TAPinto has reached out to the Richard Gorab, president and CEO of the Metropolitan YMCAs of the Oranges, made the following official statement on behalf of the organization.

"As has been reported in the local media, Timothy Smith, a resident and member of the YMCA of Greater Bergen County has been arrested for crimes for inappropriate contact with minors."  said Gorab in a phone interview.   "Upon hearing of the allegations against Mr. Smith the YMCA has immediately suspended his membership  and he no longer has access to the membership area of the facility. 

"We have, and will continue to cooperate with the authorities in their investigation.

"Out of respect for the families involved, we ask that you honor their privacy at this time.  I am sure you join us in offering our thoughts and prayers for the family involved."
