MIDLAND PARK, NJ - Hasbrouck Heights 12U Softball team fell to Oakland, 12-9, in the championship game of the Bergen County Girls Softball League Monday night in Midland Park, NJ. The team finished the regular season 10-2, 12-3 overall.
"We went in with a positive attitude," said manager Rob Riordan. "We were coming in as the underdog."
Oakland jumped out quickly, going up 5-1 in the third inning. Riordan said Hasbrouck Heights "fought back" to make it 8-6 in the fifth inning. He said Oakland scored some big runs late, pushing the score to 12-8. Hasbrouck Heights added a final run late in the game.
"They never quit. They stood behind each other all the way," said Riordan.
"That was a tough team," he said, of the Oakland team. "They were well-coached."
Hasbrouck Heights defeated River Edge, 18-2, in the quarterfinals, and North Haledon, 8-6, in the semifinals. They had previously beat Oakland earlier in the season, 10-4.
"We are proud of each and everyone of them," said Riordan of the team. "Every single girl, one way or another, contributed to the team. There is no 'one girl' on this team. It's a team of 13 girls."
