EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ -- Bow to your corner. Bow to your partner. Now everybody promenade!
The room was filled with plaid shirts and blue jeans, cowgirl boots and hats, bandanas and shiny sheriff stars at the annual Hasbrouck Heights Square Dance Friday night at the Homewood Suites in East Rutherford.
Over 90 ‘couples’ attended the event, eclipsing last year’s headcount. The girls ranged from Daisies to Seniors (high school freshman/sophomores) Girl Scouts. Two new Daisy troops helped bolster the attendance. Town-wide, there are 280 Girl Scouts in Hasbrouck Heights' troops.
Again this year professional caller Pat Cannon oversaw the festivities. She opened by teaching fundamental square dance moves including swing your partner, do-si-do, and promenade. She then moved into the “a, b, c’s” of square dancing including small and large square and circle dances, which has its roots in English/Welsh/Scottish/French dance.
After a brief break for snacks and drinks, the girls returned to the dance floor for the Cotton Eye Joe. Then Cannon led the girls and their partners in the folk dance, the Virginia Reel.
In addition, the troops collected food donations for the Hasbrouck Heights Food Pantry.
Upcoming events include Girl Scout Sunday on March 11 at Corpus Christi Church, and a camping trip in late April.
