(As part of our launch, we will look back at stories that were missed during the April to August time frame.)

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS – Depth.  It is something for that all coaches wish for.

Depth propelled the Hasbrouck Heights High School Girls' track team to a North 1, Group 1 title on May 27-28, defeating Wallkill Valley and 14 other schools at the Group championship meet held at Randolph High School.  And the Lady Aviators were able to capture the title despite winning only one of the 18 events contested at the meet.  But it was a steady barrage of top 5 finishes that carried the Lady Aviators to a 93.5 - 71 victory over Wallkill Valley. Cresskill, Park Ridge and Emerson Boro rounded out the top 5.

The depth also came to the forefront as no one had expected Hasbrouck Heights to be a strong team in 2017, after graduating several talented seniors.

"Because of all the girls we lost (to graduation), people expected us to go through a rebuilding year, " Hasbrouck Heights Head Coach Rob Brady stated.  "Because those older kids were so good, none of the younger kids, who were very good, had been able to crack the lineup a year ago.  This year,  when they got a chance to crack the lineup, they made the most out of it.”

The throwing events put on an impressive performance, led by junior Kassie Ketcho’s win in the Girls Shot Put, with a toss of 39 feet, 5 inches.  She was joined in the top five in the event by fellow juniors Catherine Castellanos, who finished third with a toss of 33 feet 5 ¼ inches, and senior Anna Tsapelis, with a toss of 32 feet, 5 inches, good enough for fifth.  That event added 18 points to the Aviators total of 93.50

Ketcho and Castellanos came in second and tenth in the discus, with throws of 103 feet, 3 inches, and 85 feet, 3 inches, respectively.  Ketcho picked up another second place in the javelin, with a throw of 120-03, Castellanos throw of 99-08 was good enough for an eighth place finish, while junior Victoria Vizzachero came in 11th with a throw of 91-05.

Monika Lucic picked up a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles, and fourth in the 400-meter hurdles.  Lucic added a seventh in the high jump, while Olivia Licini finished eighth.

Behind a trio of sophomores, the Aviators racked up points in the pole vault as well, with Natalie Stefanelli’s 8-foot vault lifting her to a second-place finish.  Kelly Innis finished fifth while Courtney Summers took home 12th place.

The relays were a strong point for the Aviators as well, picking up a pair of second place finishes in the 4 x 800 relay;  and the 4 x 400 relay   The 4 x 100 relay picked up a third-place finish.
