Hasbrouck Heights Little League Hosts 7th Annual 8U Softball Tournament

As part of our launch during August, TAPinto Hasbrouck Heights/Wood-Ridge/Teterboro, will look back at newsworthy events that happened earlier in 2017 that did not get coverage. 

HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ  -  “Thatta girl!” echoed across the diamond as Hasbrouck Heights Little League hosted the seventh annual Girls 8U Softball Classic on Sunday, June 2.  The 8U Classic was created in 2011 to provide 8 year-old girls an opportunity to play in a tournament-style competition against other teams before transitioning to the more competitive recreational softball program.

The day's festivities began with a parade of the teams onto Inserra Field, followed by the introduction of the players and coaches, the National Anthem, and the traditional first pitch.

Representing Hasbrouck Heights were Janelle Morales, Magdalene Fass, Morgan Murray, Gianna Focarino, Gabriella Amendola, Charlize Robayo, Eddy Harper, Abby Sato, Gina Minnichiello, Sara Toscano, Sofia Monchino, and Abigail Wanco.

The team was lead by manager Pat Fass and coaches Rocco Minichiello, Brian Monchino, Brendan Murray, Michael Amendola, and Paul Wanco.

“I couldn't have been more proud with the way this group of girls responded, both to the commitment of practices we held, and to the experience of a tournament atmosphere in general,” manager Pat Fass said.

“These girls were motivated. They were passionate about the sport, and they took both their individual play and that of their team as a whole very seriously. They put their full spirit into each at-bat and picked each other up over the course of the day.”

Hasbrouck Heights was joined by girl's softball teams representing Dumont, Maywood/Rochelle Park and Rutherford.  The rain held off long enough for the teams to get in all three games of the round robin tournament. All the games were close, and while the scores were kept on the scoreboard, but there were no standings kept for the tournament.  The idea is for competition without the pressure of who came in first or last overall. 

The day’s festivities wrapped up with closing ceremonies, including team trophy presentations and photos.
