CLIFFSIDE PARK, NJ -- After finishing a successful regular season with a 6-2 record in the Twin County Junior Wrestling Dual League, the Hasbrouck Heights Rec Wrestling Dual Team earned a trip to the League Championship on Saturday at Cliffside Park High School. The team wrestled at the Championship but lost a close round to a tough Fair Lawn squad.
Other teams participating in the annual championship included Fair Lawn, Wayne, Lyndhurst/Rutherford, Lakeland, and North Bergen. Lakeland beat Lyndhurst/Rutherford to win the League Dual Team Championships.
"This was our second consecutive year making it to the League Dual Team Championships, which is a testament to how hard our wrestlers work throughout not only the regular wrestling season, but also through the offseason as well," said head coach Andrew Nass. "Although we did not do as well as we had hoped in the Dual Team Championships, we gained valuable experience by wrestling in an environment surrounded by other great teams and great programs, and we hope to use that experience to help us compete at the big individual tournaments coming up in the next few weeks.
"I am very proud of how hard our team worked in order to make it to the Championships. At the beginning of the season the kids made it a goal to win enough matches in our regular season to qualify for the Championships, and they worked extremely hard in order to make that goal a reality. I believe that we have created a great culture of hard work and dedication in our program, and I could not be more proud of our wrestlers, and I couldn't be more thankful to have great assistant coaches and incredible support from our parents to be able to produce a very successful wrestling program and team."
Nass also pointed out the team was "fairly young" but praised the "great leadership from our eighth graders, Max Castro, Oliver Fermin, Andrew Parente, Damian Lalama, and Owen Williamson."
The boys who wrestled were: Deacon DeLorenzo, Nico Carvajal, Dylan Dimone, Nico Nippitella, Dylan Fermin, Matthew Fermin, Harris Kromenhoek, Drew Eckert, Kyle Von Seidelmann, Damon Rivera, Anthony Tomic, Daniel Amendola, Jake Olivero, Brandon Karwoski, Matt Calabrese, Jeff Keezer, Anthony Cummings, Owen Williamson, Connor Scuilla, AJ Parente, Tyler Cappadona, Damian Lalama, Oliver Fermin, Max Castro, Luca Perrillo, Evan Vera, Cole Asplund, Matt Quish. The team is coached by Coach Andrew Nass.
Hasbrouck Heights will be attending the annual District tournament in Hasbrouck Heights on February 17. The top two wrestlers from each weight class in each of the four divisions (8 & under, 10 & under, 12 & under, and 14 & under) will move on to the Regional tournament the following Sunday, February 24, at Hackensack High School.
