HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Hasbrouck Heights Superintendent of Schools Dr. Matthew Helfant outlined Phase 2 and 3 of the district's re-opening plan during a special remote Board of Education meeting held Thursday night. Over 240 people were in attendance online.
Phase 2 for Euclid and Lincoln Elementary Schools begins Monday, September 28, and runs until Friday, October 13, for parents choosing the hybrid model. It is broken into three sections, depending on the grade level. The re-opening plan is being re-submitted to state officials for approval, said Helfant.
Helfant provided a district wide breakdown of parents choosing the 100 percent virtual compared to the hybrid plans. In the elementary schools, 20.2 percent chose all virtual and 79.8 percent chose hybrid. In the high school/middle school, 22.7 chose all virtual compared to 78.3 percent electing for hybrid.
Students in the Pre-k Disabled program will attend school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On Wednesdays, all students will be learning remotely for a minimum day. Students in Kindergarten will attend school on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday in one of two sessions, the morning session (8:20 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) or an afternoon session (12:15
p.m. to 2:55 p.m.) On Wednesdays, all students will be learning remotely for a minimum day. Students in first through fifth grades will be divided into an “A” group and a “B” group. On Mondays and Tuesdays, group “A” will be in school from 8:25 a.m.
to 12:35 p.m., while the “B” group learns remotely. On Thursdays and Fridays, group “B” will be in school from 8:25 a.m. to 12:35 p.m., while the “A” group learns remotely.
The remote learning will consist of live-streaming the virtual students who are remote for the instruction portion of the lesson until Oct. 16. Starting Oct. 19, Remote Learning on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday will be asynchronous, meaning teachers will meet virtually with students in the morning (8:30 a.m. to 8:45 a.m.) to take attendance and review student assignments for the day. Students will then work independently, at their own pace. Helfant explained that teachers will meet virtually with remote learning students in the afternoon for up to 60 minutes (prior to 3:00 p.m.).
Phase 3 for the elementary schools coincides with Phase 2 of the middle school and high school. The hybrid schedule is again dependent on the students' grade level. Students in the PSD program will attend school on Monday through Friday from 8:20 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Students in Kindergarten will attend school on Monday through Friday in either a morning session (8:20 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) or an afternoon session (12:15 p.m. to 2:55 p.m.) Students in first through fifth grades will attend school on Monday through Friday from 8:25 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.
Phase 2 for the Hasbrouck Heights Middle School and High School begins on Monday, October 19 for parents who choose the hybrid schedule. The district is now offering an A/B schedule, which will divided alphabetically. Group A will be students whose last names are A to K, and physically attend school on Mondays and Thursdays on a modified half day. Group B will be students whose last names are L to Z and will physically attend school on Tuesdays and Fridays on a modified half day schedule. The half day A/B hybrid schedule runs from 8:15 a.m. to 12:36 p.m. From 1:15 to 2:39 p.m. students will work on assignments, and teachers or counselors will reach out to provide extra support and help or a wellness check. Paraprofessional who work with specific students with check in with their students.
Wednesday will continue to be a full day of remote learning (7:55-2:39) for all students. All students who have chosen full time virtual are expected to participate in all Group A and Group B lessons via Google Meets during the week.
Students attending in-person classes will enter the building from 7:55 to 8:15 and will have their temperatures taken. There will be no lunch, no use of lockers, and no changing for PE.
Helfant pointed out that during the first week of hybrid A/B grouping, Google Meets will not take place so teachers and administrators can acclimate the students’ return to the building, classroom procedures and safety measures like fire drills, changing classes, mask wearing, bathroom usage. Google Meets will not take place during the week of October 19, with the exception of Wednesday when all groups will have a full day of remote instruction. Asynchronous activities will be assigned to each group during the transition.
Helfant said the complete Phase 2 Return to School Plan will available on the district's website, which also includes the guidelines for sick students
The next meeting of the Hasbrouck Heights Board of Education is scheduled for Thursday, September 24 and will be remote.
