HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - Connor Friedel lined the ball over the centerfielder’s head in the bottom of the 10th inning to drive in the winning run as Hasbrouck Heights beat Wood-Ridge, 5-4 at Depken Field on Monday afternoon. Hasbrouck Heights goes to 4-2 overall with the win, while Wood-Ridge falls to 8-1.
Senior Ryan Connolly picked up the win in relief for Hasbrouck Heights.
The Aviators rallied with two out in the bottom of the tenth for the victory off Wood-Ridge’s Trey Packen, as both Anthony Peterson and Tommy Capozzi to put runners on first and second. Friedel then lined a 1-2 pitch deep to centerfield for the game winning hit.
Wood-Ridge scored first as Packen singled in Nino Iacovino for the game’s first run. Following a stolen base and a passed ball, Devin Arce singled in Packen for a 2-0 lead. The Blue Devils increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth as Phil Giancaspro knocked in Leo Giancaspro on a ground out to make it 3-0. Nick Rizos tripled in Nino Iacovino for the second run in the inning.
Hasbrouck Heights jumped back in with three in the bottom of the fourth, as Dario Morales singled with two runners on was misplayed in left field allowing three runs to score, to cut the score to 4-3
Hasbrouck Heights tied the game in the bottom of the fifth off Packen, who relieved starter Stephen Crandall to start the inning. With two outs, Packen hit Tristan Govea with a pitch, and Peterson walked, before Capozzi singled to center to tie the game at fourth.
Wood-Ridge chased Friedel in the top of sixth with a one-out double, bringing Connolly into the game. Connolly escaped the inning without giving up a run, striking out Rizos, and allowing an infield single to Packen to put runners on the corners with two out. Michael Sarlo flew out to right fielder Steven Faussette to end the inning.
Connolly was able to escape a jam in the seventh with a sharp 6-4-3 double play in the seventh inning, and the Blue Devils had runners on in each of the final four innings. But Connolly managed to get out of the jams, setting up the bottom of the 10th rally.
Connolly pitched 4 2/3rd innings, allowing no runs, four hits, walking two, and striking out three in picking up the win.
