NORTH ARLINGTON, NJ - On a day that Hasbrouck Heights head coach Dave Rispoli said the team was bowling their most important match of the year, the Aviators bowled their best all year, defeating Secaucus, 5-2.
“Today was our most important match to date,” Rispoli stated. “ It's looking like sixth place will be us or Secaucus. The boys knew it was a big day. Our goal was to avoid that one low game we seem to have each match. Secaucus struggled the first game, but Jake (Rozsa) and Johnny (Parker) carried us to a victory.
“Secaucus came out strong in the second game,” Rispoli stated. “We were bowling well and just staying even with them. Jake's "hambone" (4 strikes in a row) to start, Damiano's (DeCandia) double in the third and fourth and Johnny's hambone starting in the third frame helped us to start pulling away quickly from Secaucus.
“Secaucus cooled off in the fifth frame, but we kept rolling," Rispoli stated. “Jake stumbled in the middle but bowled a turkey (three strikes in a row) to recover. Johnny was clean (spare or strike) the rest of the game. Sean (Reyes) had a turkey of his own in the tenth frame. Let's not forget Damiano bowling his highest game of the year. Johnny also bowled his personal best and first 200 game of the year. The team crushed their old high game, 678, with a 763.
However, Hasbrouck Heights could not pull of the sweep after winning the first two games.
“The adrenaline rush wore off after the second game," Rispoli said. "I warned the boys it would happen. You could see they started out flat and looking tired. Damiano and Jake recovered from the slow start, but we fell just six pins short of the sweep.’
“It was a great day,“ Rispoli said. ”Two new personal bests, a new high game and a new team series when it counted the most. It doesn't get much better than that.”
