WOOD-RIDGE, NJ - Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge battled to a 0-0 tie in a NJIC Meadowlands boys soccer game Monday afternoon at Pomponio Field in Wood-Ridge. Antony Markonovic had four saves for the Aviators, while Philip Iacovelli had eight for the Blue Devils.
The reaction to the tie, however, we not as equal as the play on the field.
“We did not take advantage of our opportunities, “ said Hasbrouck Heights head coach William Thorne. “I was happy with our effort, but not the execution.”
“I think our team deserves a lot of credit for how we played today,” said Wood-Ridge Head Coach Albericio DePierro. “For us to play an undefeated, first place team averaging six goals a game and hold them scoreless, without being really in danger, is really a sign of how well we played.
“They are a great team, and we gave them an even game.”
DePierro said that the game might not have even had to go to overtime if it was not for a save by Markonic for the Aviators.
“It was on a corner kick with two minutes left” DePierro added. “It was right next to the goal line, It was a great save.”
The Aviators are now 5-0-1 on the season, while Wood-Ridge is 5-1-2.
DePierro is also pleased with how his team has performed so far this season.
“Our theme for the year, after last season, was ‘ Redemption’” DePierro said. The are surpassing I think even some of our own expectations on how we have played this year, “
“The players have bought into the system that we put in this summer, and have worked extremely hard. It also shows you what a few wins early in a season can do for a team as for as confidence in how they play.
“I also pointed out to the team has not been beaten yet this season when we have played a full two periods, and overtimes. The only time we lost, they stopped the game early due to thunderstorms. “ DePierro noted.
