HASBROUCK HEIGHTS, NJ - After a sloppy 10 minutes to open the game, Hasbrouck Heights scored 42 unanswered points in the first half en route to a 55-14 victory over Cresskill in a NJIC Meadowland Division game. The Aviators improved to 4-0 on the season with the win, and will face Butler next week in a showdown for the Meadowlands Division next week in Butler.
After a punt and a lost fumble, the Aviators offense finally got untracked, as Jasiah Purdie scored on the ninth play from five yards out for a 6-0 lead. Matt Gwziszc’s extra point made the score 7-0 with 2;29 remaining in the first quarter.
It did not take the Avaitors long to increase their lead. Following a three-and-out by the Cresskill offense, a Spencer Lee to Ian Rinke pass went for 37 yards down to the Cougars three yard line. Purdie scored on a three-yard run on the next play to make the score 13-0. The snap on the extra point could not be handled.
Gwziszc sailed the ensuing kickoff five yards deep into the end zone for a Cresskill for a touchback. But following another Cougar punt, it took only four plays for the Aviators to cover 78 yards, capped by Michael Robertson’s 60 yard touchdown run. Lee ran for the two-point conversion, and the score was quickly 21-0.
Cresskill went to the air trying to get back in the game., but quarterback Aiden Feulner was unable to find an open receiver, and Cresskill went three and out once again, but a big punt return by Purdie gave the Aviators the ball at Cresskill 24 yard line. Lee hit Robertson with a pass which he ran in from six yards out to give Heights a commanding 28-0 lead with 4:46 left in the second quarter.
Cresskill returned to the air, trying to score before the half. But junior linebacker Matteo Ochoa picked the ball off and returned it 60 yards for a touchdown. Gwziszc’s extra point made the score 35-0 with 2;35 remaining in the half.
The Cougars fumbled the ball away on the second play of the final drive, and the Aviators continued to make them pay.
On the first play from scrimmage, Robertson broke another long run, this time scoring from 52 yards out. Gwziszc, who was perfect when kicking the ball on the evening, added another extra point for a 42-0 halftime lead,
With the lead above 35 points, the second half was played with a running clock, and the second team defense and offense on the field for Hasbrouck Heights.
After Antonio Lora got on the board for Cresskill’s first score of the game, Rocco Minichiello went 79 yards to bring the Aviators lead back to 42 points. Jeremy Connelly added Cresskill"s last score, as he carried seven times for 58 yards, and scored from the five yard line with 6:58 remaining.
But the scoring was not done as Steven Faussette had two huge scrambles on the Aviators final drive, the last one culminating in 58 yard touchdown run and a 55-14 score.
Notes: Robertson finished the game with 11 carries for 170 yard and two rushing touchdowns, along with a five yard touchdown reception. Minichiello rushed five times for 59 yards. Lee carried five times for 22 yards, while completing eight of nine passes for 91 yards and a score. Purdie rushed for two touchdowns, but had a quiet night on the stat sheet, with only 34 yards rushing and 41 receiving.
JC Pagan, coming back from injury, made his first appearance in the second half, and was 1-1 passing for 10 yards, and had four yards rushing. Senior Ian Rinke had one reception for 37 yards, while senior Will Vera had one reception for 19 yards.
